WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will travel in January to South Africa, Zambia, and Senegal, her office announced Friday, in what will be the first of a string of Biden administration official visits to sub-Saharan Africa next year. The world’s second-largest continent is crucial to the global economy due to its rapidly growing population and significant natural resources. China’s deepening economic entrenchment in African nations, surpassing the U.S. in trade with Africa to become one of the world’s largest creditors, is also a motivator for the U.S. to deepen ties with African nations.President Joe Biden on Thursday announced…

On Tuesday, ANC MPs were instructed to back the president and vote down an attempt to start an impeachment process. Only a handful defied the whip, but Mr Zuma’s latest action of launching a private prosecution against the president might undermine efforts to bring the party together. Source link

Australia and South Africa are about to start a three-match series. (Photo by Chris Hyde/Getty … [+] Images)Getty Images There are more hyped series. Pick out any involving India, Australia and England for starters. They might generate more attention, headlines and frequency but none are consistently as compelling and competitive as when Australia and South Africa clash. Since South Africa’s readmission 30 years ago, perhaps only the 2001-02 series in Australia underwhelmed in an outlier. But that was perhaps Australia’s best team in their golden period – maybe the greatest ever Test team assembled – and even in that series…
Two holiday productions bring San Antonio culture to the fore, bridging European traditions with Mexican American cultural expressions. Dec. 17-18, the San Antonio Chamber Choir will present El Mesías, a Spanish translation of Handel’s treasured masterwork and holiday classic Messiah, and Dec. 19-23 Teatro Audaz will perform La Pastorela Audaz, a traditional Mexican Christmas story, this time told from the shepherd’s perspective. El Mesías The roots of El Mesías run deep into Chicano culture. Chamber Choir director Roland Barrera had heard of a bilingual presentation of Handel’s Messiah done in 2018 by Border CrosSing, a Minnesota choral ensemble devoted to…
Over 1,200 children’s toys were collected by the Parish-Community of the Resurrection of Christ, in Kogarah, Sydney, on the occasion of the festive period of Christmas. The land question was at the heart of the South African national liberation struggle. The 1913 Natives Land Act restricted black people from owning and occupying parts of the country, leading to whites owning about 87% of the land. This reduced the African majority to “pariahs in the land of their birth”, in the 1916 words of Sol Plaatje, the founding secretary general of the African National Congress, now South Africa’s governing party. To reverse this injustice, in 2018 the national assembly acceded to demands from various pressure groups and began the process to amend section 25 of the constitution,…
Once a rare species, celebrity authored children’s books have become stalwarts of supermarket books aisles. Perfect for a grandparent hunting a last-minute Christmas gift, or a parent looking for something that will appeal to a child reluctant to read, books by stars have become the go-to for many. Those buying them might have it in the back of their minds that these “authors” might not have done much of the writing. But that doesn’t matter, does it? As long as the kids are reading, that’s what counts. For children’s authors who do write their own stuff, it’s a little galling. They’d…
