In Botswana thousands of people attended the inauguration of their country’s new president, Duma Boko. His ‘Umbrella For Democratic Change’ party won 36 parliamentary seats and denied former president Mokgweetsi Masisi a second term. Addressing the nation in his first official speech as president, Boko called for unity after an election that brought an end to the former ruling party’s 58 years in power. More than a year after Gabon’s ruler Ali Bongo was toppled in a military coup, Gabon’s citizens are voting Saturday in a constitutional referendum hailed as a “major turning point” by the junta. The new constitution would require presidential candidates to be exclusively Gabonese and have a Gabonese spouse, eliminating Bongo’s ability to return to power.
In South Africa, hundreds of illegal miners remain underground at an abandoned goldmine.
