Issued on: 04/03/2023 – 21:53Modified: 04/03/2023 – 22:17 Thousands of people marched through Tunisia’s capital on Saturday, decrying an expanding crackdown on opposition voices and rising inflation as the country’s largest trade union called on President Kais Saied to accept “dialogue”.  The march organised by Tunisia’s powerful central trade union was the latest challenge to Tunisian President Kais Saied, whose leadership of the North African nation is prompting growing international concern. Since taking office in October 2019, Saied has consolidated his power, dismantled the country’s democratic gains and unleashed repression against migrants from elsewhere in Africa. In the biggest crackdown since the…

I don’t recall what appealed to me about this “commandments” idea when I wrote it. I probably thought it…

Hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants fled Tunisia on repatriation flights Saturday after a surge in racist attacks in the North African country following a controversial speech from President President Kais Saied. As tensions reach boiling point, FRANCE 24 talked to Patrick*, a Congolese student who decided to stay despite fearing for his safety. “Right now, we are afraid to go out for a walk like we used to,” says Patrick*, a Congolese 29-year-old who arrived in Tunisia six months ago to study international business. In the past few weeks, attitudes in Tunisia have hardened towards people like him from sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan…

NOTE: After you read Part 1, you’ll find more food for thought in Part 2. My previous post on September 1 marked exactly 10 years since my very first post at Bilingual Monkeys. Honestly, I find it hard to believe two contradictory things about this decade: that 10 years have blinked by so quickly, and also that this blog has somehow managed to endure for so long. Looking back, let me now share some of the best, and worst, of my experience blogging about bilingual kids for the past 10 years. In fact, the contradictions will continue because sometimes these…
