Wonderfull! A Celebration of Stevie Wonder: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for an unforgettable night of music, colour and joy
Review by Carla Caruso
I love a tribute show and this one celebrates a true, well, wonder.
A few fast facts about Stevie Wonder … The American singer-songwriter was born prematurely, and doctors believe he was blinded when he was accidentally given too much oxygen in his incubator.
This didn’t stop him from learning to play piano, drums, and harmonica by the age of nine. He went on to become a Grammy Award winner, activist, and the co-writer and performer of many a timeless hit.
Think I Just Called to Say I Love You, Superstition, Isn’t She Lovely, and more. Songs you’ll definitely hear at this this dazzling show – Wonderfull! – on for six nights only at The Pyramid in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga.
South Australia’s “premium corporate band” The Cast is behind the performance, which honours the passion and eternal sunshine of Stevie Wonder, now aged 72.
Compèred by Chloe Castledine and featuring The Cast’s 17-piece band, plus special guests, Wonderfull! delivers perfect melodies while weaving through stories of Wonder’s life.
My mum, Carmela, was my plus-one at the show and is a big Wonder fan. So, I thought it’d be remiss of me not to include some of her comments.
This is how she described the night in our family group chat:
It was a very tight show, with four lead singers – one female and three males – and a pretty amazing band. All were South Australian performers.
It was a big cast, and they were all smiling and obviously enjoying what they were doing. They encouraged people to join in, singing and dancing. And some, indeed, got up to boogie.
The hour went pretty quick. It started with an artist [Alexandra Bellas] painting Stevie Wonder – a piece you could buy at the end of show.
The screen behind the band kept you interested in Wonder’s journey in the music world. At one point during the performance, all the group put on sunglasses a la the man of the hour.
It was a great show, showcasing the talent of the performers!”
I still feel on a high from the show as I type. The songs evoke so many memories; you’ll definitely know all the words.
If you want some toe-tapping, feel-good fun, which honours a living legend, you can’t do better than Wonderfull!.
