🌱 Happy Halloween, everyone! Bettyann Pernice here with your fresh copy of the San Diego Daily. Enjoy that pumpkin spice latte and read along to find out what’s happening in our community:
- Bilingual poll workers are needed to help voters here in San Diego. Can you help?
- Women’s Hiring Expo let potential candidates know about opportunities in the SDPD.
- Rain is expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Get the umbrella ready!
But first, today’s weather:

Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Needed: Bilingual speakers of Spanish, Filipino, Chinese, and Vietnamese. San Diego needs poll workers who can communicate with voters who speak these languages. Advocates for new American citizens complain that the lack of in-language voting materials and assistance at the voting centers make it difficult to vote. If you are bilingual and would like to help voters, contact the San Diego County Registrar of Voters to apply for a job. (Times of San Diego)
- They came to Police Plaza on Saturday to learn about the SDPD’s hiring process. The women learned about the academy, the various units, including SWAT, K-9, Motors, and Dispatch. Police Chief David Nisleit and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria welcomed them. Assistant Police Chief Sandra Albrektsen made the keynote address. Missed the event? - Yes, the weather is lovely — right now. Enjoy it while you can because a rainstorm is expected to arrive this week. So, remember to talk your umbrella with you! Of course, the rain is much needed here in this desert we call San Diego. The little rain we have had over the last several years has not pulled us out of the drought condition. This storm system could also bring gusty westerly winds and choppy seas on Wednesday and Thursday. (Patch)
Patch deal of the day:
Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don’t need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.

From my notebook:
- Cats love boxes: “How can we purrroperly acknowledge our feline friends? We’d buy them a gift but we cat-lover’s know that when you buy a cat a present or a new toy, there’s a high probability that they’d rather play with the wrapping paper or bow it came with (if not the same box that’s been in the corner of your living room for a month).” (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- About Shaw’s agave: “Agave’s are continuing to bloom all throughout the Garden! Watch as these spikes begin to flower and give one last show before the mother plant dies off. Don’t worry though, with multiple pups to take its place, these Shaw’s agaves prepare themselves for future generations to come.” (San Diego Botanic Garden via Facebook)
- Our volunteers are passionate: “”The nonprofit workforce is filled with people who are passionate about serving others and making the world a better place. Driven by their missions for social good, they take on the hard-to-solve problems of our society. But nonprofits cannot sustain their efforts solely with a passion and a sense of purpose for such work.” Donate here.(Feeding San Diego via Facebook)
- Feline nail trimming: “Helping your cat feel comfortable with nail-trimming can be as easy as 1, 2, 3 (4, 5)! Community Animal Training Manager Juliette and her purrfect assistant Sapphire are demonstrating the toe beans game — a fun, low-stress way to introduce your kitty to paw-touching and handling! Training should always be positive — so be sure to have plenty of treats on hand, or, on paw in this case!” (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- SDPD celebrates Halloween:🎃”With Halloween right around the corner, our headquarters opened their decorated offices for some local elementary school students! They were greeted by @GoArmy & @SanDiegoFireDept outside; they got their goodie bags and were ready to see the decorated offices across many floors in our building. The kids received tips on safe trick-or-treating and how to inspect their candy before eating it. It was a fun day, and we can’t wait for next year!” (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)
