HHFB HOSTS 38TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY BOOK FAIR
The Community Book Fair returns to the Monroe County Fairgrounds this fall with over a hundred thousand books, DVDs, CDs, record albums, puzzles, games and other miscellaneous items at bargain prices to support the work of Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
This year’s book fair will run from October 13 through 18 with the following schedule:
Thursday, 10/13, 9am-7pm – $10 Admission, Veterans Appreciation Day, veterans are free and Monroe County Veterans Services will have an information/assistance table. Pappy Shack food truck will be on hand.
Friday, 10/14, 9am-7pm – FREE Admission.
Saturday, 10/15, 9am-6pm – FREE Admission, make your own tie-dye shirt.
Sunday 10/16, 9am-6pm – FREE Admission. Half-price Day. Heroes Day – meet local firefighters. Pappy Shack food truck.
Monday, 10/17, 9am-6pm – FREE Admission, $10 Bag Day; Better Books $20 Bag Day, limit one.
Tuesday, 10/18, 9am-6pm – FREE Admission, $5 Bag Day. Better Books Closed.
This year’s fair will again take up two buildings at the fairgrounds with more books, movies and music available than usual. Highlights include a very large collection of Science Fiction, a new Photography section and plenty of Children’s books, mysteries and fiction as well as non-fiction such as History, Biography, Arts, Religion and Travel.
Canned food donations are encouraged, and donors will receive a $1 Book Buck coupon. The first 25 children who bring a food donation will receive a free book.
General sale books are priced at $3 for hardbacks and $1 for paperbacks with DVDs at $2 and CDs at $1. Better Books, which include rare and collectible items are priced individually.
The food bank is not accepting additional book donations until December 1. Future book donations will be used in the 2023 Book Fair. Donors are requested to hold any donations due to storage and staffing concerns.
The Book Fair is the food bank’s second largest annual fundraiser and helps support the distribution of over 5 million pounds of food each year through direct service programs and over 90 partner agencies in six counties. The food bank has experienced a very high level of demand for food since the start of the pandemic which has remained high due to the pressure of inflation on low- and fixed-income families and seniors.
“It’s been a very busy year and we’re seeing almost pandemic levels of need due to high inflation,” said HHFB Executive Director Julio Alonso. “We’re hoping for a really successful Book Fair that finds great homes for all the treasures we have to offer.”
