Lee Laws, 89, passed away peacefully in her own home on August 9th, 2022 with her family at her side.
Born in Oklahoma City on October 21, 1932, Lee Laws graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later received a Master of Education degree from Southwest Texas State University ( Texas State University) with Counseling Certification.
Lee Laws had a very successful career with Austin ISD, eventually becoming the AISD Director of Federal Programs with added legislative lobbyist responsibilities on both the state and federal levels. She touched many lives as an educator and was devoted to the job of protecting equal rights for female students, low- income students, bilingual students and students with disabilities.
People who know Lee Laws describe her as a person with a huge smile, a giving heart, and keen intelligence. She continued to read two different newspapers daily and played the piano every day until her final days. Her positivity radiated throughout her life but was in full evidence when she beamed her bright smile and told her granddaughter “This is a wonderful world!” during their last conversation.
Lee Laws believed in voting and staying politically informed. She never missed the chance to vote, and she worried about the loss of our democracy.
After retirement, Ms. Lee dedicated her time to Sims Elementary School. She played the piano for the Sims Silvertone Show choir, made their 100 shiny silver vests, and even handmade marimbas when she realized the students did not have enough instruments to play. She was honored by KVUE 5 Who Care in 2000 for her volunteer work at Sims. The Sims’ kids always held a special place in Ms. Lee’s heart!
Not only was Lee Laws a true servant of the Austin community, she championed her own children’s and grandchildren’s interests in full capacity. From doll collecting to science fairs to attending numerous basketball games, her service to her own children was indisputable. Woodworking, music lessons, and long supportive heart to heart talks were the norm with her wonderful grandchildren.
Lee Laws loved meeting new friends and would create long-lasting deep friendships. She loved to watch the Cedar Waxwings come each winter and eat berries. She loved to watch the clouds and point out their beautiful shapes and colors. Her hot air balloon ride was a highlight in her life!
Lee is preceded in death by both of her parents. She is survived by her 4 children (Larry Laws, Ted & Lori Laws, Kelly Laws, and Karen Gish) and her 5 grandchildren (Lynn Laws, Landon Laws, Lauren Laws, Logan & Kelsey Laws, and Tyler Laws) who she loved very much. She also has 2 great grandchildren, Lexington Laws and Greyson Laws who brought her much pride and joy!
We will always miss our dear mom!
As per Mom’s request, a funeral service will not be held. In lieu of Flowers, a donation to the ACLU is most appropriate.
