Amazonia: Adelaide Fringe 2025 Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 stars for a dance extravaganza
Review by Jo Parkinson
Audiences can expect lots of shimmy and shaking, as local dancers take part in an hour of dance extravaganza in Amazonia.
Amazonia is a vibrant, dynamic performance that combines dance, music, and storytelling to create a captivating experience for its audience. The show begins with Moa, a young Amazonian girl enjoying life in the jungle with her friends and takes us on a journey through its demise due to climate change and human greed. It’s up to Moa and her village to save the Amazon before it’s too late.
The story has a strong environmental message about the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, portrayed creatively through dance styles like Brazilian, contemporary and jazz.
Upbeat Brazilian music, and artists like Lady Gaga, Shakira, and Ricky Martin, keep the energy high and the audience engaged. The use of costumes to represent elements like fire, rain, and greed adds a visual layer to the performance.
Our highlights included the energetic live drumming and the huge headdresses. We loved seeing the cast having fun and performing and appreciate the amount of hard work and rehearsals that go into putting together a show such as this. We did note a small amount of nudity in one part of the show and a couple of the dance moves were a little suggestive. Drag was also featured in the show. We recommend Amazonia for children 10 years and over, as very young children may not be able to engage with it for the duration.
