The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Friendship, assumptions, acceptance, and caring for others.
In this beautiful and gently humorous story, readers will follow a group of well-meaning bunnies as they puzzle over the needs of a toy rabbit.
The Nantucket Bunnies have spotted something terrible—a bunny has been kidnapped by a boy and needs rescuing! The boy is very different from a bunny and doesn’t seem to know about bunny care: he has been giving her ice cream (could make bunnies sick) and taking her to aquariums (bunnies could fall in), bookstores (too many words for bunnies), and to the beach (the waves are too big for bunnies).
And what’s more, the bunny is not looking great … she’s kind of floppy and has no appetite. But when the Nantucket Bunnies finally get close enough to check up on her, they find she might not need rescuing after all. The boy may be different, but he is her friend!
Central to the story is the idea that while checking in on others we think might be in trouble is definitely right, our assumptions about them may not always be right. The bunnies are opinionated and energetic, with their hearts in the right places, making them delightful main characters for readers to identify with. Softly colored artwork presents the Nantucket landscape in beautiful detail and helps readers spot the punchline (the bunny in trouble is actually a toy) that eludes the bunnies themselves.
Bunnies to the Rescue! is sweet, funny, and carries an important message about caring for others.
