The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Indian mythology, demons, going potty, heroism, and humor.
A Naughty Potty Demon Tale tells the traditional tale of the demon Ahi through the all-too-familiar problem of plumbing blockages.
In Indian mythology, there is a demon serpent named Ahi who is famous for trapping all the world’s water … and this is a major problem when you need to flush the potty! Ahi is blocking up the toilet, and flushing just makes him giggle. He refuses to be intimidated by threats and shutting him in doesn’t really solve the problem. Flinging toilet paper down his throat doesn’t work—he attacks back and shoots soggy paper all over the bathroom! The hero Indra defeated Ahi with a magical Vajra – maybe a plunger will do the trick? After a major and deadly battle, will Ahi be defeated?
As with the other stories created by Deven Jatkar, readers are introduced to both Indian mythology and vocabulary, all while laughing at the young hero’s quandary. The lively cartoon-style illustrations are full of delightful details, from the magazine the hero is reading as he sits on the toilet to the royal clothes he imagines himself wearing as he battles the imaginary demon in the bowl. Despite the earthy humor, the legend is delivered with sensitivity, and an informational page at the end of the book allows readers to also read the more traditional version of Indra and Ahi’s battle.
A Naughty Potty Demon’s Tale is another wonderfully humorous and enjoyable story from Monkey Mantra Press.
