The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Language, expression, diversity, and play.
In this beautifully illustrated picture book, readers get introduced to words as individuals just like them and learn about their power.
Words are not always easy companions. Sometimes, they can be challenging. Some words are difficult to find when you need them. Others can be hurtful or scary. Some only appear at the wrong time, and others have trouble getting on with other words. In other words, words are just like kids – each one is unique, and they can take some time to get to know! However, if you are willing to be patient with them, try them out, and give them space in your life, they can provide you with truth, connect you to others, and help you be everything you want to be. Words are powerful friends.
Through beautiful pencil illustrations filled with diverse child characters and creatively imagined word characters, this picture book literally brings to life the role language plays in every child’s growth and self-expression. Fittingly, the simple, rhythmic lines of text use words very effectively to convey emotions and explain complex concepts in a way that makes them accessible to even young readers. The book’s overwhelmingly positive messaging about language makes it a perfect starting-point for thought-provoking discussions, while the imaginative rendering of words as characters with their own personalities opens up a space for children to create and share their own stories about words.
Words is a creative and entertaining exploration of language, perfect for both the classroom and sharing at home.
