Oak Folk is a nature-inspired playgroup at the leafy Uraidla Showgrounds and offers a two hour sensory play experience.
Review by Adaire Prosser
If you’re looking for a playgroup that takes things outdoors and keeps the kids busy – then make sure to check out Oak Folk Nature Inspired & Sensory Playgroup. Set among the base of large oak trees, the leafy, shady setting will call to your inner nature child.
As well as a beautiful outdoor location, Oak Folk has plenty to occupy the kids during their two hour sessions. There are a range of sensory activities set out across the lawn on tables and picnic mats. Children are able to wander and explore at their own pace. The experiences vary each week and target a range of skills and abilities.
We attended during Term 4 (October 2024), and offered experiences included homemade playdough, transferring of lentils and pasta in water trays, dried pasta craft as well as blocks, farm animals and finger puppets. The highlight for our four year old reviewer was the ice-cream stall where there were tubs of play ice-cream to scoop into different containers. He also enjoyed the craft and playdough table.
Our one year old reviewer enjoyed role playing with the babies, making (drinking) fresh orange juice, and practicing her transferring skills with dried lentils and pasta. The musical toys were also a favourite, and she enjoyed finding out the sounds they all made.
There is also a tent set up with books for reading, a sandpit with a nearby mud kitchen and digging utensils and the kids always love the nearby log car/steamroller that is a permanent fixture.
Things to Consider:
- Come prepared – hats & sunscreen are a must, also consider waterproof clothes/shoes or a change of clothes. There is water play offered, and the grounds can be damp/muddy in some places.
- Pre-purchase tickets online, then sign-in on arrival.
- A part of Playgroups SA, if you are planning on attending regularly you will need to become a member by the third visit.
- There is plenty of room for prams.
- Consider bringing a picnic rug and a packed lunch/snacks for the kids.
- Suitable for children of any age, but experiences aimed at 6 months to 5 years approx.

Uraidla Showgrounds – 86 Swamp Road, Uraidla
Session are 10am-12pm fortnightly on alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays during school term.
