The Market Trail is a great, low cost activity offered by the Adelaide Central Market as part of their Big Market Adventures for Little Foodies program – a collection of school holiday activities designed to get kids excited about cooking and where their food comes from.
The Market Trail activity typically runs during school holidays and can be booked in advance, with limited walk ups available each session. They often book out, so we suggest getting in early!
Each child receives a bag and a map with ten pit stops to visit within the Market. The trail is self-guided, and you can walk the trail at your own pace, in any direction or order that you wish. Each participating stall has a pit stop sign, and upon presenting their map, kids will receive a stamp on the map and an item from that stall.
The items and participating stalls vary each school holiday period. In the October 2024 holidays, we received a Babybel cheese, bread roll, apple, chocolate pretzels, lollies, biscuits, mandarin, metwurst, popcorn and chocolate coated strawberry.
The recommended final stop is usually at Providore, where kids receive a small cup of melty chocolate and a strawberry – something that needs to be eaten straight away.
Participating in the trail is a great way to explore the Market. It also gives kids a chance to practice their map reading skills, as well as their manners – saying please and thankyou, and making sure they don’t push in front of other shoppers.
The opposite side of the map contains a colouring in page, and kids receive a small packet of coloured pencils when they start.
On the day, you can collect your map and bag from The Market Stall, which is located near the Gouger Street central entrance to the market.
