Burchell Reserve and Playground | St Peters | Review

A recent redevelopment at Burchell Reserve in St Peters has brightened up this area with a small playground, accessible features, multi use courts and plenty of facilities.

Review by Claire Davill

Burchell Reserve has undergone a complete redevelopment in 2024, installing a large stormwater drainage system and revamping the old tennis courts and playground. The result is a small but accessible playground, a creek/pond and bridge to explore, plenty of open lawn and a multi-use court with tennis courts, half court basketball and netball ring.

The reserve sits below street level and can now be accessed via stairs or an accessible ramp. More accessible features continue in the playground, with a wheelchair accessible trampoline and merry-go-round.

Plenty of soft fall surrounds the equipment and there are two small soft fall mounts to run up and over and jump off. A reclining swing suitable for those with mobility issues and a toddler swing are included, as well as a small rope climbing frame with a platform.

Stepping stones wind through the garden, and the stormwater drainage wetland will be a great spot to look for bugs and tadpoles. A small bridge spans the wetland, connecting the playground to the multi-use courts.

Next to the playground there is also a single piece of exercise equipment suitable for adults and bigger kids.

A sealed path circles the playground and makes a nice circuit for riding or scootering for little kids. One half of the reserve has been retained as open lawn, with fresh turf laid – perfect for ball games or a run around.

Facilities include accessible toilets, barbeques, a picnic shelter and drinking fountain.

Things to consider:

  • The playground is not shaded, but does have quite a lot of natural shade from trees. The multi-use court is in full sun, and you’ll need sunscreen and hats in summer.
  • The reserve is partially fenced – there is fencing along the entire back and sides of the reserve, and along most of the street-facing side. There is no fencing at the entrance to the stairs and ramp, and at the open lawn end of the reserve.
  • Bring balls and tennis rackets for the multi-use courts.
  • Bring bikes and scooters, especially for little kids. The path creates a nice, flat, safe practice circuit for very little kids.
  • The playground is small, so this reserve is suitable for shorter plays.

Location:

Sixth Avenue, St Peters – just south of Stephen Tce
