The Basics of Climate Change
To become an environmental warrior and help with the fight against climate change, children ultimately need to understand the issues that we’re facing, how they are caused and what they can do to help. While it is a large topic in itself, it can quite easily be broken down and explained using analogies. The reason behind climate change is essentially the increase in harmful greenhouse gases forming a blanket layer around the earth, stopping heat from escaping. This is what has lead to a change in atmospheric weather conditions and an increase in the occurrence of natural disasters.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
There’s plenty of ways children can help from remembering to turn switches off at their mains, reducing their carbon footprint by walking and spending time outside as opposed to being on their devices.
Reduce Waste
Waste is another area to focus on. First of all, it adds to unsightly landfill sites and pollutants affecting animals as well as the need to produce brand new resources. By reusing, recycling, and upcycling unwanted items, such as old garments, children help make a difference to the planet overall.
Making Better Decisions
Where you cannot avoid purchasing something brand new, teach your child about making smarter shopping choices. There are lots of items that can be found in stores that are made from recycled materials and are biodegradable.
Whilst teaching your child to be more environmentally conscious, you should also set an example for them to follow.
