The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Privilege, appreciation, gratitude, recycling, cars.
The Squeaky Wheel uses simple language, characters, and images to teach young readers the importance of gratitude and appreciation.
Squeaks is a wheel with a pretty good deal in life. He and his family live on a very fancy car, but Squeaks does not appreciate how lucky he is. He complains about everything from the weather to getting dirty when the vehicle is out and about. Then, one day, his car’s owners decide something is wrong with him, and they send him to a junkyard. There, he meets tires that really have something to complain about—like being stuck full of nails, melted, or even set on fire. Listening to their stories, Squeaks realizes he has much to be grateful for—especially when he gets recycled into a children’s playground.
Readers will enjoy imagining what it must be like to be a car tire, helped by the humorous, colorful digital illustrations. At the same time, however, they’ll also learn gently about the importance of considering others and recognizing your own privilege. The dialogue punctuating the illustrations adds a layer of humor to witty one-liners and puns. Best of all, the proceeds from the book support the BC Children’s Hospital, meaning readers can smile, knowing they are already practicing gratitude and giving back!
The Squeaky Wheel is a fun and accessible story for teaching young readers about gratitude and privilege.

About the Author
Dr. Farzin Forooghian is an ophthalmologist who is currently practicing in North Vancouver, Canada. His “training” in children’s book writing comes from reading hundreds of children’s books with his children. When his oldest daughter, Ziba, expressed an interest in writing stories at the age of 7, he developed The Squeaky Wheel with her. This was intended to be a story to teach his children the meaning of gratitude. Initially, it was intended to be shared only amongst family and friends. However, due to the positive feedback that was received, it was decided that it should be shared with the rest of the world. As this is a non-profit endeavor, all royalties go directly to charity (BC Children’s Hospital).
