How to Enjoy a Quieter Swim This Summer

Your Timing Matters

You can’t plan a full day at the beach, no matter how much you love sandy castles. Beaches are likely to be packed throughout the summer. How long do people really spend at the beach? The average UK tourist will lie in the sun for an average of 70 hours during a 10-day vacation. So, to put it into perspective, this means 7 hours a day. No wonder beaches are so crowded!

So, ideally, you want to plan ahead and avoid peak hours. Early mornings offer a quieter alternative. The light is gentle, the air is still, and the water often feels at its freshest. If you’re not naturally an early riser, consider going just before sunset at the end of the day. These are the quiet windows when you are holidaying.

Go Freshwater Swimming

Who says you need to be at the beach to enjoy the water? There’s so much inland water to choose from, especially in a place like Italy, that you can avoid the coast altogether and still go swimming. Lakes and rivers tend to be overlooked, which means they are a lot less busy.

In Italy, lakes like Lago di Mergozzo or Lake Ledro offer crystal-clear waters surrounded by nature, with plenty of spots to swim, picnic, or explore nearby towns. Even lesser-known lakes can provide beautiful settings for a family day out, with shallow areas for children and deeper spots for adults looking to stretch out with a proper swim.

Go Further Afield

Sometimes the best way to find peace is to leave the shore behind altogether. If you’ve ever dreamed of hiring a small boat or taking a ferry to quieter spots, you’re not alone. These days, there are so many ways to enjoy a boating day out with children or friends, from short coastal trips to full days exploring remote coves.

The beauty of going further out is not just in the space and quiet—it’s in the new opportunities it opens up. With deeper water and more privacy, you can try paddleboarding, snorkelling, or even take things to the next level with a beginner scuba diving course. It’s a chance to experience the sea in a new way, away from the crowded shallows, and to create memories that feel a little more special.

Hopefully, this gives you plenty of ideas to avoid the crowd and still make the most of the summer by the water!
