Sitters Memorial Drive Playground | Burnside | Review – a hidden playground surrounded by a forest of gum trees.
This playground is tucked away at the back of a large eucalyptus forest, far enough away from the road that you can easily miss it!
The playground is worth seeking out, because it’s a quiet place to play with a variety of equipment for small and big kids.
The central climbing structure includes a spider web climbing net, ladders and a climbing wall. The top of the frame is a netting platform and this is the only way to access the tube slide. This means the slide is off-limits for little kids, but provides a great climbing challenge for bigger kids.
There are rope stepping stones and a little rope bridge that smaller kids can tackle, with the lower sections of the climbing net and climbing wall providing enough footholds for them to climb around the base of the structure.
Nearby is a fantastic suspended seesaw that rotates. The suspended format means no sudden bumps, and it’s sized so that little kids, bigger kids and parents can all play on it.
Then there is a basket swing nearby, and a cute little picnic shelter in the centre of the playground.
All the equipment is surrounded by rubber soft fall, and large areas of lawn surround the playground. The park bends around from Sitters Memorial Drive to Kings Avenue, and there is a drinking fountain near Kings Avenue.
The forest between the playground and Sitters Memorial Drive is also a great place to explore.
Things to consider
- The reserve isn’t fenced, but it is set far back from any roads.
- There are no shade sails in the reserve, but the trees provide plenty of shade.
- In late summer, when the gum trees are in blossom, there may be bees on the ground underneath the trees. We didn’t see any in the playground itself.
- There is no off-street parking, so take care when getting in and out of the car.
- There are houses nearby, with one house’s back deck right next to the playground. Be considerate of the neighbours and don’t play loudly early in the morning or late at night.
How to get there
The playground is easy to miss. There are two access points:
- Park on the south side of Sitters Memorial Drive, just south of Greenhill Road
- Park on the north side of Kings Avenue, just east of Wyatt Road
