Bunktopia: Adelaide Fringe 2025 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️   5 stars for incredible creativity, imagination and uniqueness

Review by Jo Parkinson

If you are looking for something a little different to take the family to at the Fringe, we highly recommend Bunktopia.

There is something so unusual and mesmerising about the art of shadow puppetry, and Bunktopia showcases this in a clever and entertaining way. Traditionally, shadow puppetry is performed from behind a screen with light projecting images for the audience to view. What we loved about this performance, was that most of the shadows were made in front of the screen so that the audience could see exactly how the images were made. This made it captivating for children, as they could watch and understand how the shadows were being made.

Starting out with small and simple shadows, each story portrayed was humorous and clever, never predicting what would be coming next. Using simple handmade, everyday objects such as cardboard, tinsel, masking tape and gloves, the artist had been extremely creative in coming up with ways to make impressive shadows, complete with moving parts. Some of the puppets were made and came to life as we watched, surprising us with the results!

As the show went on, the screens became bigger and bigger until the final act that was life-size, projected onto the backdrop. With help from some hilarious audience participation, the final story involving Royal poodles, trolls, lava and a swordfight, provided an uplifting ending to the performance.

Kids will enjoy throwing ping pong balls onto the stage, and if you are lucky enough you might score a cup of popcorn!

We loved the final quote just before the finale,

‘Enjoy your day, enjoy your life, enjoy the sun, enjoy the rain, no matter how big you get, you don’t need much to play.’

We felt this captured the essence of what the show was about; if you use your imagination and creativity, you will never be bored.

This show would suit children between the ages of 3 and 12 and runs for approximately one hour.
