The Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Hahndorf has a shady toddler-friendly playground that older siblings will enjoy too.
Review by Adaire Prosser
If you find yourself in Hahndorf for the day, make sure you check out the lovely playground at the top of the Pioneer Memorial Gardens. It has been well-designed with toddlers and young kids in mind with large flat steps, railing and gentle slides. It is also surrounded by big leafy trees and benefits from a lot of shade.
Our 18 month old reviewer loved the tube tunnel and walking up and down the wooden slat bridge (endlessly). The slides were a good size and gradient for her to navigate herself. Older siblings will be able to entertain themselves with a few advanced options for climbing, and a big rope snake for balancing or to be used as a swing. Our four year old reviewer had fun on the rock climbing wall and fireman’s pole.
There is lots of nice shady lawn areas, and a large gazebo with bench seats. A swing set is always a favourite, especially for siblings.
There is a well-maintained toilet block close to the main street, and a picturesque picnic bench underneath the vines. The playground is mostly fenced, with a few open sections for walkways.
Things to Consider:
- There is no dedicated car park, and street parking can be hard to find during the busy season (usually cooler months and school holidays).
- Older children may enjoy the playground at Alec Johnston Park a bit further down the main street.
