The Children’s Book Review

O is for Pig: Book Cover

What to Expect: Vocabulary, silliness, and rhyming.

O is for Pig is not your average alphabet book—it’s better! Mariah Clark Skewes has crafted an entertaining and refreshing take on the alphabet book.

In O is for Pig, readers are introduced to the letters of the English language and onomatopoeic sounds, providing a strong link between the shapes of the letters and the sounds they make. Skewes has also included an array of rhyming sequences, such as “O is for pig because it says ‘OINK’!” to further enhance young readers’ literary skills.

Terri Einer’s colorful illustrations provide readers and nonreaders alike with the opportunity to identify items that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Often, these items are hidden within the illustration, bringing a fun and interactive hunt-and-find feeling to the book—this helps to engage the reader further and continues to reinforce the connections between letter and sound while expanding vocabulary.

Filled with playful rhymes and engaging illustrations, O is for Pig is an excellent addition to any home or school library. It not only entertains but also fosters early literacy skills, making it ideal for parents and educators who want to inspire a love for reading in young children.
