The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Animal rescue, pets, responsibility, friendship, caring for others.
This heartwarming short chapter book is about the bonds that we form with the animals in our lives and that they form with one another, even after the shortest periods of time.
When Luke and his rescue dog Buddy find a lost kitten at the beach, they quickly become attached to him. The only problem is that Freddie already has a family—the tag around his neck lists a phone number. Luke dutifully returns the kitten to its home but can’t help noticing that the family is both unenthusiastic and not very attentive to the kitten’s needs. Soon, Luke receives a call – the family wants to find a new home for the kitten, and they want Luke to help. Luke has no hesitation – he and Buddy will give Freddie a home! But will the family be able to keep Freddie safe until Luke can collect him?
Buddy and Luke are an endearing pair of protagonists, and readers will learn responsibility and empathy from their caring responses to the kitten and the family. The story also teaches readers about our bonds with animals and subtly instructs them on the care and consideration needed when bringing animals into their lives and homes, from providing a safe environment to considering the relationships between animals. Best of all, the story has a happy ending, with the kitten, dog, and human all finding a home with each other.
Surprise at the Beach is a feel-good story for all animal-loving readers.
