What to Expect: Moving house, home, nature, and friendship.

In this beautiful picture book, readers are shown the remarkable diversity of nature
and are encouraged to connect with it through the metaphor of home.

Kate was sorrowful when her family moved to a new house. In her new town, she
didn’t know anyone. She missed her old friends, her old town, and her old house. To
cheer herself up, Kate decided to go for a walk and explore her new home—and she
discovered something magical! Her new home is near a forest full of new friends,
from the birds singing in the trees to a beaver building a new home of his own and a
whale whose home is deep underwater. All these new friends have homes in
different places, but they are all inhabitants of the same home – their home is our
beautiful planet!

Kate is a likable character whose curiosity and openness to the world around her
turn an ordinary walk in the woods into an adventure. Simple text that emphasizes
dialogue underscores the story’s message about connection, while the beautiful
artwork uses earthy tones to invoke the spirit of the forest.

Kate the Earthling invites readers to see the environment in which they live through
new eyes and to feel at home in the natural world that surrounds them.
