The Harbourmaster walking trail is a 1.9km family friendly circuit along the coast of Port Elliot and is suitable for all abilities.

If you are visiting Port Elliot with the family, the Harbourmaster trail takes you along the coastline from Horseshoe Bay to Knights Beach. The main trail is suitable for all abilities with only slight inclines and you are rewarded with amazing coastal views, awe-inspiring rock formations and may be lucky enough to spot a whale during the right season (May to October).

The majority of the path is flat, and some sections are paved or bituminized making it suitable for large-wheeled prams. There are some sections with stairs within the loop, but you can avoid these if you wish. While you can take dogs on this walk, bikes are not permitted. There are plenty of park benches along the path if little legs need a rest or if you want to enjoy the sights.

Other features on this walk include stair access to Lady’s Bay Beach and Green Bay Beach, small access trails leading to some spectacular rock formations and some trees that are ideal for hiding in or climbing. From Freeman’s Lookout on the top of the bluff, you can find a map which details historical shipwrecks. There is also plenty of signage along the way detailing some of the bay’s history.

You can easily access the trail from multiple points including Horseshoe Bay, Harbour Masters Reserve or the Freeman Lookout carpark at the end of The Strand.

Facilities:

  • Car park – Harbour Masters Reserve, Freeman Lookout carpark or at Horseshoe Bay
  • Toilets located at Horseshoe Bay or Continental Park
  • Lots of Benches located along the path

Things to consider:

  • Dog friendly, but no bikes permitted
  • Large-wheeled, stable prams will manage most of the path (but may be bumpy on cobblestone sections)
  • Stairs are an optional extra, unless you are hoping to access Lady’s Bay Beach or Green Bay Beach

Things to see and do nearby:

  • There is plenty to see and do in Port Elliot – spend the rest of the day at Horseshoe Bay, head into the main town for retail or dining options, or aim to catch the train at the station during school holidays.
  • Drive to nearby Goolwa, Middleton or Victor Harbor to continue exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Location:

The Strand, Port Elliot, South Australia
