US President Joe Biden has arrived in Lobito to promote a massive railway project that links Angola’s Atlantic Ocean to mining regions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. Known as the Lobito Corridor, the project is viewed as an effort to counter overwhelming Chinese influence over critical minerals. Experts and analysts, however, have expressed doubts on whether the project would benefit the local economy.
Namibia’s ruling SWAPO party was declared winner on Tuesday in last week’s presidential elections, which were disputed by a coalition of opposition parties. The party’s candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to become the country’s first-ever woman president.
The southern Libyan cities of Murzuq and Sebha have experienced more than a decade of instability. They have been the sites of several bouts of civil war and tribal conflicts since the 2011 uprising and NATO intervention. Today, a reconstruction fund led by Belgacem Haftar, the son of General Khalifa Hafter who rules over eastern Libya, is expanding operations to rebuild these cities which are located near Libya’s economically important oil fields.
