What to Expect: Friendship, dogs, farming, neighborly help, trust

In this short chapter book, readers are invited inside the joys and hardships of sheep farming through the eyes of a sheep farmer.

Working the sheep farm on his own is a lonely task for Jayden after his parents’ death until the day that Moss turns up. No one seems to know where this friendly, talented sheepdog comes from, but he is rumored to have been all over the county, helping farmers out but never staying long. With Jayden, it’s different; Moss moves in for good and becomes Jayden’s best friend and invaluable right-hand helper on the farm. Then, a new neighbor moves in, and their friendship is threatened—sheep have been disappearing, and Joseph is certain Moss is to blame. Moss and Jayden know better—some wolves live in the area. But will providing Moss’s innocence cost them their lives?

Jayden is humble, hard-working, and kind, making a sympathetic main character for readers to get to know. His struggles and triumphs are relatable, making it easy for readers to connect with him. Moss, on the other hand, is intelligent, loyal, and lovable—the perfect canine best friend. The story centers on the tension and excitement of a wolf hunt, keeping readers eagerly turning pages while still learning important lessons about trust, loyalty, and community. The conversational-style first-person narration helps keep the text accessible even for readers new to chapter-book reading.

My Dog, Moss is a heartwarming chapter book, perfect for dog lovers and those who want to learn more about farming culture.
