What to expect: Immigration, community, cultural exploration and comparison

In Isabel y Pedro en su país nuevo, author C.C. Cárdenas has crafted an important and timely chronicle of the lives of two children who have recently arrived in the United States from Mexico.

The story begins with young Isabel and Pedro finding themselves in a new country, with a new language and new customs. They feel lost and uncertain after leaving the smells and sounds of their communities and the love and warmth of their extended families. With a keen eye and heartfelt empathy, the author describes the difficulties of trying to start over in a new place without the comforts of home. Isabel and Pedro begin to find friends and community through the universal things that bring people together—shared meals, shared interests, and the open arms of a welcoming community. Uplifting images convey the joy of making new friends, exploring new activities, and finding one’s place in a new world.

This heartwarming story is a great way to introduce children to the challenges that new classmates or neighbors might face when arriving in a new country. Written in age-appropriate language that conveys hardships with kindness and hope, this is a book that will help newly arrived children feel seen while bringing their stories and perspectives to a larger audience. Although it is written in Spanish, the illustrations readily convey the story’s important messages that are applicable to children that have recently arrived or that have been here for generations.

Highly recommended.
