The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Friendship, family, difference, acceptance, and home.
Filling a space somewhere between a chapter book and a picture book, this delightful, funny story is about the warmth of family, the power of acceptance, and the joy of finding a home.
Brunt is a monster—but he’s not like the other monsters. He’s kind and considerate, and he likes to tend his beautiful garden and cozy home. Being so different, Brunt is also lonely. Then, one day, he meets a boy named Eggbert, an orphan with no real home and no parents to care for him. Brunt and Eggbert are the perfect match, and they soon learn to love each other as father and son. That is, until they risk an outing to the school open house. When Brunt’s disguise fails, he is caught and captured and put in a cage at the zoo! Will Eggbert be able to free him and claim back the only family he has? He’s not sure, but he knows he has to try – because that’s what families do!
Brunt is loveable and determined, and Eggbert is charismatic and intelligent; together, they form an interesting, engaging pair of main characters. The story is told through paragraph-length chunks of text filled with humorous asides and observations, perfect for readers who are nearly ready to transition to chapter books, with color and spacing cleverly deployed to support easier decoding of the text. The vibrant artwork is full of fun details for readers to spot, from the potted cactuses Brunt is growing in his cave to the patchwork chair he sits in to do his studying and knitting.
Brunt and Eggbert is a heartwarming story about home and family, sure to become a family favorite.

About the Author/Creative Director
Jeff Dorrill, a private equity attorney, decided after years of professional writing that it was time to write something without footnotes. Jeff sought to pen an entertaining and emotional children’s book about the magic of chosen family, inspired by the many caregivers who played a role in his own rearing.
Jeff resides in Dallas with his spouse Melisa and son Hunter. Jeff’s daughter Tenley, son-in-law Ryan, and grandchild Vivian live in Houston.
Despite the time dedicated to practicing law, studying (Jeff is completing his third master’s degree at USC), and writing, Jeff doesn’t spend his life behind a desk. He has completed over 40 full Ironmans (in six continents) and has won ten national championships in his age group in endurance races, including three Ultra-Distance Triathlon National Championships.
Truer words have never been spoken when Jeff (often) states that his whirlwind circus of activities would undeniably not be possible without the love and support of his family.
