The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Dogs, service, disability, friendship, and self-belief
In this simple, sweet story, readers will learn about the challenges faced by visually impaired people and the ways in which service dogs help them overcome those challenges. More importantly, however, readers will learn about self-belief.
Mitchie is an excellent guide dog – in fact, he’s top of his class. His trainers tell him he will do wonderful things, but Mitchie is not so sure. He’s just a puppy – how can he live up to everyone’s high expectations? Mel is an older gentleman who is losing his eyesight. His doctors tell him not to worry because his new guide dog will help him stay independent, but Mel is not sure. He doesn’t know how to take care of himself – how can he also care for a dog? Together, Mitchie and Mel learn to care for one another, showing that anything is possible with friendship, trust, and time.
Mitchie is an adorable protagonist, and readers are sure to empathize with his anxious determination to do his job well. Through his friendship with Mel, readers are also encouraged to see the world through the eyes of an older individual, fostering empathy and understanding between generations. The colorful artwork shows Mitchie in action as a guide dog, helping readers recognize the appearance and behaviors they might see in real life.
Mitchie the Service Dog Gets a Job is both heartwarming and instructive, perfect for introducing readers to the concept of disability support.
