Patch Theatre’s latest interactive show for children, Superluminal, blends art and science in a fun, immersive, glowing world full of strange creatures.

Review by Claire Davill

Children are guided through several spaces by a performer and encouraged to explore with their own lamp. Changing colours reveal new creatures on the walls and footprints on the floor.

The lanterns become a campfire, fireflies float overhead, and children are invited to build their own fantastical creatures. These creatures then inhabit different worlds and make different sounds. Children get to become their creature creations using props to create silhouettes against a light wall. Finally, each child receives their own magic glowstone to take home.

The whole experience evokes a sense of curiosity and wonder, and is paced perfectly for young children.

Things to consider:

  • The show is aimed at children aged 4-8 years old. Older kids will still get a kick out of it, but it’s definitely more appropriate for little kids.
  • Much of the show takes place in low light or dark spaces, but it is never dark for too long. Adults can stay close to their kids if they get a little worried about the dark.
  • Arrive in plenty of time for your session, as the effects are on a schedule and can’t be held back for late-comers.

Superluminal by Patch Theatre is on from Saturday 6 July to Saturday 10 August 2024 (see website for session times and ticket prices)
