The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Being different, self-acceptance, diversity, and animal sounds.
Freckles’ Best Ribbit uses a simple animal story to teach a sophisticated lesson about perfectionism, self-acceptance, and self-criticism.
Freckles the Frog wants to try out for the Spring Chorus, but he can’t—his ribbit is not right! Whenever he opens his mouth, instead of a ribbit like the other frogs, he makes a sneeze, hiccup, squeak, or loud CROAK instead. Freckles tries everything to make his ribbit right, but nothing works. Then, his friends point out something he hadn’t thought of before: having a croak instead of a ribbit means he will really stand out at the tryouts. Freckles’ friends are right—his unusual sound is something to be proud of, not fix!
Freckles may be a frog, but readers will empathize instantly with his frustration at struggling to match the abilities of those around him. The story’s message that our differences are also our strengths is powerful; and it’s made even more so by the fact that Freckles’ peers help him learn it. Throughout the story, the softly colored artwork and rhythmic rhyming text provide an atmosphere of safety, encouraging readers not to feel afraid of stepping outside their comfort zones. The story ends with a note of fun—literally—as a final activity asks readers to sound out and identify different animal noises.
A delightful read, Freckles’ Best Ribbit is the ideal starting point for discussions about daring to be oneself. It is sure to evoke giggles as well as insight.
