Fermoy on Foot Art Trail | North Adelaide | Review

The streets of North Adelaide feature works from the David Roche Collection in a self-guided trail from July until September 2024, creating an outdoor art gallery to explore.

Review by Claire Davill

The Fermoy on Foot Art Trail features fourteen reproductions of art pieces on the walls of buildings throughout North Adelaide’s streets, including Melbourne Street, Brougham Place and Tynte Street.

The art pieces are designed to highlight stories of North Adelaide’s history and buildings – you’ll find a painting of a Lion outside the Lion Hotel, and a butcher-themed painting outside a local butcher, for example.

This is a great trail to walk with kids, learning about art and history along the way. The pram friendly trail is mostly flat and paved and takes in some minor and quiet streets in North Adelaide. The trail passes right by the Glover North “Helicopter” playground, so you can incorporate a play into your walk.

There’s also plenty of family friendly food options along the trail, such as Butter and Toast on Melbourne Street. The trail passes near O’Connell street, with options like Cafe Fellini, Bakery O’Connell, and plenty more.

Each art piece is marked on the footpath by a circular spot, and signs are placed where the trail changes direction or crosses a road. You won’t be able to rely on signage to navigate the whole trail, we recommend downloading the map from the Experience Adelaide page to make sure you don’t get lost.  The section between Ward Street and Brougham Place is not well signposted and you’ll definitely need a map to stay on track.

Things to Consider:

  • The trail follows some busy roads, particularly Melbourne Street. All trail crossings here use dedicated pedestrian lights, but on the quieter streets you’ll be crossing roads with no pedestrian features. The traffic here is quieter, but you’ll need to keep an eye on little ones.
  • Don’t miss the artwork in a chimney outside the Old Lion Apartments on Jerningham Street. This artwork is a little off the main trail along Melbourne Street.
  • You can park at the David Roche Gallery on Melbourne Street, or near the Glover Playground on Lefevre Terrace. We found plenty of parking on Stanley Street near artwork number 8 as well.
  • There’s no need to do the artwork in order, start where it suits you.
  • Consider a visit to the Australian Toys exhibit in the David Roche Gallery while you are enjoying the trail. This exhibit runs until 24 August 2024 (check the website for costs and opening times).
  • The trail is advertised as 2.3km in length, but we measured it closer to 2.9km. We were able to complete the trail within an hour at a leisurely pace.
