Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA in Adelaide – Review

Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA is an absolutely spectacular production with dazzling costumes, a moving set that fires the imagination and incredible performers delivering daring acrobatic feats that seem physically impossible.

When you think of a Cirque du Soleil production, you expect creativity, daring and spectacle and this show certainly delivers! Between the visually breathtaking giant butterfly, a majestic horse and lioness, the mesmerising fountain of water flowing in patterns from the peak of the big top, the huge disc backdrop and the breathtaking performances, LUZIA creates a sense of awe that comes with watching this world-renowned company.

The production is mammoth! The LUZIA roadshow travels with 115 people from 25 different countries, including 44 performers representing 19 nationalities. The huge production moves around the country in 99 shipping containers and it takes more than 100 people just to install the Big Top tent. The stunning rain curtain drops thousands of litres of recycled warm water like a magical giant waterfall. It’s a technical marvel and is fascinating to see how this finely engineered set works. Water seamlessly disappears and the stage is completely dry for the next scene with stealth-like coordination.

Is LUZIA suitable for kids?

Absolutely! Bear in mind though that the show goes for 125 minutes including a 25 minute intermission so it’s a long time for wriggly kids to sit. It is loud at times and dark in the tent.

Apart from the amazing performances there is fun audience interaction with the travelling clown which adds amusement for young audiences. The costumes are so colourful and lively, graceful animals appear at different times, plus some really cute plant characters pop up too.

Children who love Disney Encanto may feel familiar with the Spanish music and vibe (although Encanto was set in Columbia).

The show is joyous, and what really stands out is the sheer camaraderie between the performers. It’s an absolute delight to watch talented performers from around the world come together in support of each other.

Since seeing the first Cirque du Soleil when Saltimbanco visited in 1999, 25 years ago, it has never failed to impress. Cirque du Soleil is an experience you need to do at least once in your life, but once you’ve seen one, you may not be able to resist seeing them all.

We often hear many people complain that Adelaide misses out on visiting world class acts who tend to favour the Eastern states. Don’t miss this opportunity while it’s travelled to Adelaide for us. Let’s make sure we support it to make it worthwhile for shows like this to come to South Australia.

Cirque du Soleil LUZIA is playing under the Big Top at Adelaide Showground until 7 July 2024
