The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Fantasy, baseball, virtues, and sportsmanship.
In the chapter book Grammy’s Treasure Hunt, readers will discover how the impact of the choices we make in life can shape outcomes for better or worse.
Ten-year-old Cameron arrives at his grandparents’ home just in time to complete an adventure his grandmother has prepared for him. If he is successful, he will be rewarded with treasure! Excited to discover his quest is to play baseball with spiders and bugs— “That’s great because I am really good at baseball…”—he is still left wondering what the game has to do with finding a treasure.
As Cameron embarks on his journey, he meets and helps a sloth named Inchy, who becomes his guide. Soon, it is revealed that the players on Cameron’s team, the Bugs, each embody a virtue (kindness, honesty, respect, and truthfulness). In contrast, the opposing team, the Spiders, is comprised of vices (meanness, cheating, lying, bullying, and selfishness). Cameron will have to make choices while playing, impacting his search for treasure as he plays the most challenging baseball game of his life.
Author Joan Marie has crafted a thoughtful book exploring concepts of virtue and vice through the characters and their actions, offering insights into the moral lessons imparted to young readers. Setting the story around the game of baseball is a canny way to show how the “vices” are often present in everyday life and makes it relatable to readers. With short chapters and a clear font, Grammy’s Treasure Hunt becomes easy to read and enjoy for younger readers. The addition of cute illustrations at the beginning of each chapter sets the tone and foreshadows the content nicely.
An ideal book to read when children are struggling with the inevitable challenges life throws at them, Grammy’s Treasure Hunt is a charming way to reinforce the importance of virtues in everyday life. The lessons on handling vices when encountered make it both a valuable and enjoyable tale for a child’s home library.
