Adelaide Beaches with Vehicle Access
Beach loving families will know the struggle of having to drag everything you need for an outing at the beach from the carpark all the way down to the sand – especially on a hot day! So it’s always a bonus when you can drive onto the beach and set up for the day straight from the boot! This also allows you to bring more beach equipment, such as a shade tent or marquee to set up next to your car, as well as tables and chairs.
Adelaide’s closest beaches that allow vehicles on the sand are in the City of Onkaparinga region. They have some basic rules if you are planning to take your car on the beach or launch a boat or jet ski. It’s important to check their website for details because fines may apply.
WHICH BEACHES TO DRIVE ON
Vehicle access is permitted on Aldinga, Moana, Sellicks and Silver Sands beaches between the hours of 5.30am and 11.59pm.
Vehicle access is restricted on all beaches between the hours of 12 midnight and 5.30am.
On the Yorke Peninsula, North Beach in Wallaroo (160km north-west of Adelaide) is another beach you can drive on, while Flaherty’s Beach (232km west of Adelaide), has vehicle access but is only suitable for 4WDs.
During some of the busier periods in the warmer months, such as school holiday weekends and Australia Day, there is a fee to drive onto the beach. There will be a tent at the entrance where you will be required to stop and pay.
WHERE TO LAUNCH
Boat and jet ski launching/retrieving is only permitted from the beach at the following locations:
- North (to the right) of Aldinga Beach ramp
- South ( to the left) of Sellicks Beach ramp
- Moana Beach between Nashwauk Cres and Macquarie St
- There is no launching/retrieving of boats or jet skis on Silver Sands Beach at all

WHERE TO DRIVE AND PARK
Please keep your vehicles parked on the sea side of the bollards at the top of the beaches. This protects the pebble banks and vulnerable soft sands which are invaluable to the beach ecosystem.
Help protect the vulnerable Hooded Plover shore birds by obeying the signs and Hoodies volunteers.
WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT
Please keep everyone safe by driving on the sand at the 10kmh speed limit. You will often see young children running from their car down to the water and back.
BEACH PASSES
Beach passes are not required for vehicle access until early December. Free seasonal passes are available each year for Onkaparinga residents only. Non-residents and those unable to produce a beach permit can pay a ramp fee to access the beach.
It is an offence to drive a vehicle on the beach without a permit or without paying the access fee at times when the ramps are monitored. Fines apply.
