The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Kindness, fear, friendship, magic, dragons, and loneliness.
Filled with whimsical creatures, quirky names, and a healthy dose of make-believe, The Sour Milk Dragon is a story about inclusion, friendship, and learning to face your fears.
Burpus and Bulbus have a very good reason to be afraid of going out into the forest—they’ve been chased before by the terrifying sour milk dragon, who spews hot sour milk from his nostrils! However, they have no choice but to face their fears because it’s their job to collect delicious ingredients for dinner from the forest. They’ve barely left their tree-top village when the dragon appears, chasing them around until they are completely exhausted. Eyes closed, they huddle together and await their terrible fate … but maybe the dragon has something friendlier in mind than eating them.
Readers will love laughing at Burpus and Bulbus’ brotherly bickering, but they will also learn important lessons about what happens when you take the time to get to know those who seem different and scary. Indre Ta’s vibrant artwork brings the magical world of Tree-Wee homes, caterpillar coffee, and pootie fruits to life, playing with light and shadow to create illustrations that almost seem to glow.
The Sour Milk Dragon is a fun and magical exploration of the joys of letting others into your life.

About the Authors
When husband and wife writing team Michael Albanese and Wynn Everett-Albanese set
out to write children’s stories, they didn’t have to look far for inspiration. Their goal was
to write stories that their daughters would love to read, ones that promoted family,
friendship, and kindness. The result is their new picture book series, The Adventures of
Birpus & Bulbus, about two forest-dwelling brothers and their whimsical journeys that
teach valuable life lessons.
Michael and Wynn believe that a great story involves a hero and villain with a
compelling conflict, with twists and turns that evoke emotion from young readers. They
hope that children find their stories humorous and inspiring and that the lessons of
kindness stay with them long after the book is closed.
When they aren’t writing heartwarming children’s stories, Wynn, a working actor, and
Michael, a business owner, enjoy spending time with their two daughters where they live
in South Atlanta, Georgia, along with their two cats, Fuzz and Buddy.
The Sour Milk Dragon, the first installment in The Adventures of Birpus & Bulbus series,
is Michael’s fourth children’s book, the first collaboration with his wife, Wynn. Wynn has
appeared in film TV, most notably Marvel’s “Agent Carter, “ HBO’s “Doom Patrol,” “The
Newsroom,” NBC’s “This Is Us,” ABC’s “Ordinary Joe,” Netflix’s “Teenage Bounty Hunters”
and “Sweet Magnolias”.
