On March 24 2021, the Islamist group Al-Shabab attacked Palma in northern Mozambique, near a TotalEnergies LNG facility. Over a thousand people were killed and survivors fled to a nearby resort. Militants tried to break in and several victims were unable to be airlifted out. Survivors say TotalEnergies should have had better escape protocols in place.
