The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Love, learning, self-esteem, parenting, joy.
What is real love? Does it have anything to do with romance? Real babies know the secret! They know about love at first sight and about getting hooked. They know about playing and having fun together, being swept off one’s feet, and being caught when you fall. They know all about what makes someone a hero. They know about kisses, emotional fights, unexpected relationships, and—of course—about happily-ever-afters. Real babies know that real love is real, and you can find it in the bond between baby and caregiver—no matter how that bond comes about or what it looks like.
Baby’s First Love Story reads at first like a whimsical metaphor about love, families, bonding, and nurture, playing on the familiar tropes of romantic love, dating, and relationships. Beyond this, however, the book also establishes important ideas about where our ideas of love come from and how they develop through our formative experiences. Cartoon-like illustrations in a limited range of bright pinks and primary colors offer diverse and inclusive representations of what love and parenting look like. At the same time, the simple text uses wordplay to add interest and humor for adult readers.
Baby’s First Love Story is a delightful and heartwarming exploration of parent/child love, perfect for shared reading and new-parent gifting.
