Kenya’s parliament’s voted throuh a raft of tax hikes in the first budget of president William Ruto. The contentious changes will double the tax on fuel to 16% to generate another 61 billion shillings or a little under 400,000 euros, for the government. The bill still has to be signed by Ruto and opposition members have threatened to call fresh protests if he does. The bill also proposes a new housing levy which Ruto says will help build more affordable houses but many Kenyans hit hard by the rising cost of living say they can’t shoulder the extra cost.
