Disney Pixar Movie Review – Elemental

In a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: How much they actually have in common. Directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream.

Disney and Pixar’s Elemental is an all-new, original feature film set in Element City, where fire, water, land and air residents live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Partly Cloudy” short), produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Cars 2″), and featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade, respectively.

Play & Go Review – June 2023

Elemental is a delightful movie, full of heart and soul. It’s a cute love story of two characters from different elements (Ember as fire and Wade as water), and of family love. The story depicts the migrant journey, exploring the struggles and prejudice of minorities, and the sacrifices made by those who have left behind the life they knew, with the hope of creating a better life in a new land.

From a visual perspective, the colourful Element City is a fascinating modern metropolis to behold. The amazing animation is visually spectacular and mesmerising to watch.

The movie has many layers. Younger viewers will enjoy the cute and quirky characters and the colourful world they live in, with so much to take in. Older kids and adults will find some deeper and thought provoking ideas portrayed. Other themes woven through the storyline include inter-racial relationships, as well as generational expectations, plus some beautiful life lessons such as learning to follow your own dreams.

“Embrace the light when it burns because it won’t always last forever.” -Ember

This is not the type of movie with a big bad villain and car chases, so there are not scary scenes or violence. Those who are more keen for an action packed, thrills a minute comedy, may find this a little slow.

This is a charming take on a storyline that while it’s not really unique or original, it’s great for it to be depicted in a family movie for younger audiences to explore. It is relatable for many, while being an opportunity for learning for others.

Very much a personal project, Director Peter Sohn worked on Elemental for 7 years. Sadly, with what is a fitting tribute to his immigrant Korean parents, both passed away during production, and never got to see the finished product.

As a self confessed sooky la la, I of course cried during the touching moments, so take tissues if you are prone to shedding a few tears. Elemental is a heartwarming journey that touches the heart and leaves a memorable mark. It is the best animated movie we’ve seen for a while.

P.S. Also, there’s a little short treat before Elemental starts. We get to see a little glimpse of Carl and Dug the dog from Up in ‘Carl’s Date’. There’s no need to wait til after all the credits are done for Elemental – there’s no additional post credit snack.
