Blue Lake/Warwar | Mount Gambier

The central attraction in Mount Gambier is the unique Blue Lake, and it’s worth checking out if you are visiting Mount Gambier or the Limestone Coast. And yes, it really is blue!

The colour of the lake is something you really have to see with your own eyes. Photos just don’t do it justice! The best time of year to view the vivid blue colour is in summer, when the water warms up and the lake turns it’s signature turquoise blue. But it’s worth a stop to view the lake at any time of year.

The best view, in our opinion, and easiest access for children, is the Blue Lake Lookout on Bay Road. There is a small car park across the road, and a convenient underpass to safely walk under the road to a well-fenced lookout where you can view the whole lake. There is also a small platform to view the adjacent Leg of Mutton crater here, and a small stone tower to climb for elevated views of the lake.

The carpark is located about 350 metres from both John Watson Drive/Bay Road intersections. John Watson Drive circles the rest of the lake, and makes for a nice short drive to view the lake from other angles. You’ll find occasional car parks and view points around this circuit. There is also a sealed path around the whole lake, if you feel like a 3.6 km walk with amazing views.

The lake is an amazing example of a crater lake – the water fills a dormant volcano, one of several in the area. The water is about 75 metres deep. There are information boards at the lookout explaining the history and geology of the area.

Facilities at the lake include a carpark, lookout, picnic area, public toilet and shop/gift shop.

Location:

John Watson Drive/Bay Road, Mount Gambier
