Barbaroi: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars for edgy, exciting physical theatre that is family friendly

Review by Sharon Harrington

Barbaroi is raw, atmospheric physical theatre, set in a dystopian future with a pumping alternative soundtrack.

This is a cool show. It feels edgy and foreboding and yet all the acts are surprisingly family friendly.

Think of a low lit, Bladerunner-style, post-apocalyptic setting, where gangs rule the streets. Each sequence seems to be a “dance off” of sorts, where each member proves their skills via acrobatics, aerials, juggling or other circus feats.

The aerial rope routine, where a spunky young woman twirls her way up to the ceiling and down the rope was awe-inspiring, and a definite favourite.

The acrobatic sequences were full of spectacular flips and tumbles that left us sitting on the edge of our seats.

A routine with glowing violet hula-hoops spinning every which way was just stunning.

This is a show that you can take older children to if they are not overly sensitive to the gritty atmosphere and enjoy acrobatics. Our Acro-obsessed Play & Go kids (6 & 7 years) sat mesmerized, loving every moment, as did my husband and I.

Barbaroi deservedly won the Adelaide Fringe’s Best Circus & Physical Theatre Award in 2021. The show is back for its final season at the Adelaide Fringe this year, so check it out!
