Duracell batteries commonly used in children’s toys recalled ahead of Christmas

A batch of Duracell button batteries have been recalled by ACCC Product Safety Australia ahead of Christmas.

Commonly used in kids’ toys, Duracell’s two-pack of 3V Lithium Button Cell Batteries CR2032 were recalled over a packaging defect.

“The Lithium Button Cell Battery packaging does not carry the correct warning symbols and wording,” the ACCC said.

The affected batch will have the barcode 041333002217.

The regulator those who have purchased the defected batteries to contact the supplier Intertrading by email on compliance@intertrading.com.au for a copy of the warning information, but also included a list of potential hazards.

“If young children gain access to button batteries and ingest them, they are likely to suffer severe internal burn injuries, which can result in serious injury or death,” the ACCC said.“Button batteries also pose a choking hazard to young children.

“Many children’s toys are powered by or use button batteries to produce light and sound effects, including plush toys, toy cars, digital pets, early learning watches, light-up yo-yos, games, novelty items and singing Santas.

“In Australia, one child a month is seriously injured after swallowing or inserting a button battery, with some of them sustaining lifelong injuries. In Australia and globally, there is a growing record of injuries and deaths from button batteries.”

The defected batteries were sold between 22 June and 18 October at Choice the Discount Store in Warwick, Kallangur, and Rothwell in QLD, and Tweed Heads in NSW, Marvell International in Homebush NSW, P&O Distributors in Campbellfield in Victoria, and in Budget Gifts & Varieties.
